Scholarships

The Gen-Fed Alumni Association annually presents the Richard S. Lackey Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to an experienced researcher holding either a paid or volunteer position in the genealogical community.

The scholarship covers full tuition for the Genealogical Institute on Federal Records, ticket to the alumni reception; and partial travel, hotel, and meal costs. The winner will be notified by February of each year and have a reserved slot in that year’s institute which is scheduled for the second week of August.

Look for news posts for when the application season opens in November/December.

A list of past Lackey Scholarship Winners


The American Society of Genealogists offers an annual Scholar Award, based on a manuscript or published paper of at least 5,000 words. The award carries a $1,000 grant, applicable towards tuition and expenses at one of five major academic genealogical programs in the United States. Awardees may choose to attend the Genealogical Institute on Federal Records with a guarantee spot.

The Board for Certification of Genealogists offers three separate scholarships which may be eligible for attendance at Gen-Fed.  The deadline is 15 March.  See their website at https://www.bcgcertification.org/learning/educational-activities#scholarships for details on the following:

  • The Paul Edward Sluby Sr. African American Scholarship
  • The Scholarship for an Applicant Under the Age of 40
  • A Scholarship for an Individual Currently “On The Clock” with BCG (having already submitted a preliminary application).
